Admission Requirements

Admissions


Prerequisites

Academic records of all applicants for admission must meet the standards established by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Required prerequisites are graduation from an approved high school and satisfactory completion of three years (90 semester hours or 135 quarter hours) in a college or university accredited by a recognized regional accrediting board.

Students must have the following college credits and be degree eligible upon completing the Medical Technology Program: Chemistry, 16 semester hours or 24 quarter hours, including organic and/or biochemistry; biologic sciences, 16 semester hours or 24 quarter hours, including immunology and microbiology; and mathematics, 3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours.

Applicants who have not taken an organic or biochemistry course or a microbiology course within the past seven years must update their knowledge in these fields before attending this Medical Technology Program.

Course of Training

Eight students are admitted to the Program in July. Time is divided between lectures and supervised rotations in the clinical laboratory. Ten hours of lecture per week are given during the 12-month program.

After a one week orientation program, each student is given personalized instruction in clinical chemistry/immunology, coagulation/hematology, microbiology, blood bank, urinalysis, parasitology, mycology, and phlebotomy.

Attendance is required Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with some scheduled changes at various points in the program.


College Affiliation

The Ball Memorial Hospital Medical Technology Program is affiliated with Ball State University, Muncie; Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion; Taylor University, Upland; Purdue University, West Lafayette; Saint Joseph's College, Rensselaer; and Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana. However, an application from a student attending any college or university will be considered for a position in the school providing the prerequisite requirements and earned a baccalaureate degree earned.

Students enrolled in the Medical Technology curriculum at Ball State University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Taylor University, Purdue University, Saint Joseph's College, or Anderson University are eligible for a bachelor's degree after satisfactorily completing the year in the Ball Memorial Hospital of Medical Technology Program.
